DIY Mother’s Day Brunch

Show your love for Mom this Mother's Day with an easy tablescape to make her feel special.

Moms do so much. From carpool queens and late-night laundry doers to homework helpers and boo boo kissers, they deserve a break. Ditch the canned-message cards and candies this holiday and give her something she’ll never forget—a get together she doesn’t have to work for! Gather all of the women in your life—it’s time to celebrate, and Stephanie Woody of Providence Handmade in Charleston shows us how.

Pick a piece of inspiration…

These bowls are fun and floral with unexpected bright colors and subtle polka dots. They inspired the vintage-looking floral table runner and the inexpensive polka-dotted burlap tablecloth. Whether you’re inspired by your nana’s prized Blenko vase or a quilted swatch made with love, Stephanie says, “Keeping a common design element like dots or stripes can make mismatched items cohesive.”

Think outside the flower box…

Boxwood sprigs and colorful cabbages make an unexpected complement to spring tulips. Inspired by our Sunflower Fiesta pitcher, we grabbed other pitchers of varying heights to display our centerpieces. Cake stands underneath add height and interest by keeping your guests’ eyes moving around the table. “Let the food be a part of your décor,” says Stephanie. We put fresh fruit in small Blenko dishes and Depression glass.

How charming…

Help your guests know whose glass is whose with these super-easy custom wine (or in this case, juice) charms. Purchase pre-packaged polymer clay from the craft store (we used a brand called Sculpey) and roll it out with a rolling pin until you reach the desired thickness. Use the blunt end of a skewer to poke a hole through the charm and insert a silver grommet, which can be found in the scrapbooking section of the craft store. Then use alphabet rubber stamps to impress sayings or names onto the clay. Bake according to package directions. When the charms are done, allow them to cool. We created this weathered look by brushing cream paint all over the charm, making sure to get into the cracks and grooves. “By wiping off the excess with a tissue, the letters and designs pop,” says Stephanie.

Backdrop basics…

This piece of inexpensive burlap was easy to transform into a creative tablecloth. “A Spouncer makes each dot the perfect size and consistency,” says Stephanie. “And resealable plastic baby food containers are the best way to use and store acrylic paint, like this cream color we used on the tablecloth.”

Layer your linens…

Texture created by fabric gives your tablescape dimension and life. This 2-yard piece of rough burlap ($6 from a local fabric store) paired with soft solid napkins and a quilted table runner are the perfect combination for a professionally put-together look. We even took scraps of the burlap, extra coordinating fabric, and ribbon and layered them around our napkins. They’re held together by small clothespins that are stamped with your guests’ names! “Inexpensive alphabet stamps make it easy to get a polished look—not everyone has great handwriting,” says Stephanie. The best part? They can be purchased from any craft store for a custom look.
