Canopy Queens
Want to know why Jane was attracted to Tarzan? We found out on a TreeTop Canopy Tour at Adventures on the Gorge.
Want to know why Jane was attracted to Tarzan? It was the swinging from trees that won her heart. You’ll understand why after you and your friends spend the day enjoying the ultimate girlfriend getaway at The New River Gorge TreeTops Canopy Tour—an eco-adventure unlike any other. During the TreeTops Canopy Tour, the longest canopy tour in West Virginia, you’ll soar from tree to tree through thickly forested areas and over cascading waterfalls and crystalline creeks. An intriguing combination of adrenaline rush and visual clarity, this multi-sensory experience is nothing short of magical. The crispness of pine, the musk of magnolias, the heavy sweetness of rhododendrons waft through the air, and you can’t help but be entranced by the varying shades of green, a palette fit for the finest artists.
This half-day adventure, part aerial exploration and environmental education, begins with a tutorial by two experienced guides. Once you are outfitted with a state-of-the-art harness, helmet, and gloves, the guides will take you through a practice run. Then all you’ll do is walk off the platform and let gravity do the work. The 10 ziplines vary from 100 feet to 800 feet long, ensuring that each run is unique. You’ll also navigate five swinging aerial sky bridges suspended from towering hemlocks, and three short hikes, before rappelling back down to the forest floor.
There is no doubt that the New River Gorge area has become the outdoor adventure capital of West Virginia thanks to folks like Dave Arnold, Kevin Whelan, and Doug and Jeff Proctor, the founders of Class VI, who grew their river rafting outfitter company into a full-service, four-season resort destination. With the recent merger of Class VI River Runners, Mountain River, and Rivermen under the Adventures on the Gorge umbrella, their outdoor adventure campus includes a wide range of lodging offerings, whitewater rafting trips, TreeTops Canopy Tours, Gravity ziplining, hiking trails, rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, paintball, bridgewalks, and destination gourmet dining. With packages that range from $199 to $349, you can customize your adventure. Combine a canopy tour with another recreational activity, add lodging and meals, and you’ll have a carefree, all-inclusive package.
