I'm the One the Other Isn’t

WEB EXCLUSIVE

After years of recounting their stories, the Toompas twins decided to write them down, bringing you the book, I’m the One the Other Isn’t. They remember their childhood with a particular fondness that makes you feel as if your own father was telling stories. The Toompas twins are from Clarksburg and are known across the area, as Stephen works as a local pharmacist and Stanley is an optometrist.

The book begins with the brothers’ birth and recounts many peculiar situations through their young lives. From running away from storms to a metal house, it seems fitting they were born on April Fool’s Day.

But Stanley and Stephen also write about the difficulties they faced over the years, like being separated and the wrath of a detail-oriented algebra teacher. Keeping with the tone of the book, they find humor in life’s obstacles along the way.

The book’s title says it all. For Stanley and Stephen’s entire lives, people have struggled to tell them apart—even their parents. Once, there was an accident that left a scar, and for a little while everyone used that marking as a cheat sheet, but not for long. When people went back to asking, “Stanley or Stephen?” the brothers answered, “I’m the one the other isn’t.”
