The Left-Handed Backward Book
It takes a unique approach to stand out amongst the mass of children’s books. Kelly Kinsolving distinguished herself from the rest with her book, The Left-Handed Backward Book. This book is unlike any other because you read it from back to front. Each page is full of alliteration and adorable illustrations. The illustrations were done by Jann Maser, formerly Jann Dunham. Kelly says she loves working with Jann. “We think the same things are funny. I don’t have to explain what I’m trying to get at because Jann is already thinking the same thing.” The combination of Kelly’s quirky alliterations and Jann’s clever illustrations make this book a must read for your child.

The Left-Handed Backward Book counts down from 10 with 10 different animals. You see their backs until you turn the page and see what mischief they are getting into. A special treat for West Virginians, the animals are from real towns in West Virginia. Jann drew inspiration from her home state from the rolling hills on the cover to the blue and gold uniform on the raccoons from Reedsville. Jann loves illustrating children’s books. She says, “It really takes me back to when I was little and being read stories and having that funny kind of movie running through your head of how you think the story would look.”
Kelly and Jann have enjoyed great success from the first book. You can find it in stores across West Virginia, on amazon.com, and even in a store in California named Lefty’s. Look for their newest book, The ZYX Picnic, coming out this fall.
