12/02/11Sparkle, Shimmer, and Shine With These Holiday Makeup IdeasI have suffered from SOS, better known as Shiny Object Syndrome, for most of my life. Symptoms include immediate divergence from deep conversations on the meaning of life to exclaim over a brightly colored butterfly fluttering past the window, slowly turning a sequined ballet flat silently admiring the amount of shine, or the inability to leave a jewelry store much to your husband's dismay. I also suffer from Coloritis (same thing as SOS, just replace sparkles with bright colors) and the S1W0 strain (Sephora 1, Wallet 0.). The holidays always make my suffering worse, as there is just so much sparkly and colorful makeup to be had. Granted, it's always available year-round but it just seems to proliferate as the weather gets cold, much like Soviet missiles in Cuba in the... Posted at 09:47 AM Comments |

11/18/11The Charleston Shopping Guide: West Virginia StyleBlack Friday is next week, and the “official” Christmas shopping season kicks off much to the horror of our pocketbooks and credit cards. Some of you may be into camping out in front of stores to try to catch some amazing bargains, while there are those who may prefer to shop in their underoos on Cyber Monday. However, a new shopping day has been added, Shop Local Saturday. On Saturday, shoppers are being encouraged to visit their local boutiques and mom'n'pop shops in a show of support for local retailers. Charleston is home to many fantastic shops that carry that perfect gift for anyone on your list or for yourself. As far as I'm concerned, it's always the right time for a great new pair of shoes. So as the dust settles on Black Friday after... Posted at 02:46 PM Comments |

11/14/11Runway to Real WayLove this winter's runway trends, but don't know how to put your own look together for a low cost? I’ve put together a few styles to match these runway trends so now you can transform the runway into the real way at home! These three runway trends come from the Michael Kors collection and have "classy" written all over them. The basic neutrals will go with any outfit, during almost any season. It’s all about the Big comfy sweaters this winter. I discovered this fabulous cream sweater and paired it with a basic pair of skinnies. Instead of the open toe heals shown on the runway, I chose a pair of high heel booties. This chocolate faux-fur frame bag and a swipe of Elf’s mineral lipstick will bring the outfit together.... 10/27/11Halloween Hotties: Couples Costumes on GLAMOURComing up with an original costume for yourself is hard work. Add a dude to the mix and you’re in serious need of reinforcement. Check out these five creative couples costumes I stumbled upon at Glamour.com. 1. Ariel Moore and Ren MacCormack Whether you’re old-school or you fancy the new 2011 version, you can’t go wrong channeling Footloose. Have the Ren in your life go with jeans, a white T-shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and, of course, dancing shoes. For you: Try a fitted corset top, low-rise jeans, and cowgirl boots. 2. Maggie Ryan and Dean Lowrey First of all, if you haven’t watched ABC’s new Pan Am, it’s time to give it a shot! Second, this... Posted at 10:18 PM Comments |

10/07/11Channel Your Inner PrepAs someone who regards Lisa Birnbach's The Official Preppy Handbook as their own personal style guide, it makes me happier than a fox in a henhouse that the classic preppy style is a hot trend this fall. I personally feel, however, that preppy is always in vogue, thanks to the timeless styling of the clothes and accessories involved. Instead of looking for the next new trend, a true prep welcomes their old clothes like a beloved old friend. Many people think preppy is all pink-and-green argyle and polo shirts with popped collars. That's probably due to the notion that most people associate the preppy look with the Brat Pack of the 1980s. As much as I love his movies, John Hughes is probably responsible for putting that idea in people's heads. Who is the... Posted at 06:36 AM Comments: 1 |

09/30/11Budgeting Beauty: How to Save on EssentialsWhen it comes to shaving our budgets, most ladies put beauty products in the "need" category. A study commissioned by Mintel validates this assumption, reporting consumers spent $2.32 billion on shampoo and $1.71 billion on conditioner in 2010 alone. So what's the best way to save on essentials without resorting to dollar-store cosmetics? Here are nine tips to keep both your beauty and your budget intact. 1. Hair Products Consider extending the life of your shampoo (and hair color) by using dry shampoo or baby powder in between washes. Hand Soap Foam hand soap is all the rage these days, and one of the easier beauty products to DIY. Refer to... Posted at 07:56 AM Comments |

09/23/11Inspired Game Day GlamIt's Friday, and while most people are eagerly awaiting the weekend for a little R & R, there are those who know they're going to be working. Working to get the grill fired up, hamburgers ready to go, and hitting the highway in a hurry to make sure they get a good spot for tailgaiting. You know it's fall—and game day—when you drive somewhere and see large amounts of school bumper stickers and antenna flags standing at attention. For most people attending football games, there's a standard issue uniform of jeans and a school t-shirt. Or if you're attending a WVU game: jeans, sweatshirt, and your choice of obscene t-shirt. I kid, I kid. But you don't have to be limited when choosing game day apparel. A WVU game has an... Posted at 08:30 AM Comments |
