Spice Things Up: Trends in Bedroom Decor
Despite the fact I blog about fashion, there is actually something else I shop for more often than shoes or purses: home goods. I spend more time shopping in the bedding section of department stores than I do the clothing section. No joke, I probably own somewhere in the neighborhood of 10+ comforters and quilts, and that number doesn't even count my duvet covers. There's an old saying that goes “Change your shoes, change your life.” I believe that very much about my bedspread. Our bedrooms say a lot about us, and tend to be our most personal retreat—where we can truly be ourselves. This is why I spend a lot of time tinkering around with how my bedroom looks. It's my temple away from the world, and I treat it like such.
Take me to any department store, and I may find at best 2 to 3 things that I love in the clothing section. Take me to the home goods section, and I'll walk out with everything. Here are some of my current loves:

Both of these bedding collections make an instant statement when you walk in a room. The gold and blue design on the left is from Diane von Frustenberg, and the design on the right is from Trina Turk. Both are available at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. When such a bright and colorful print, be sure to keep moderation in the rest of the room. Keep clutter and knick-knacks to a minimum, and avoid accent walls and busy wallpaper/curtain prints. You want a peaceful place to relax, and surrounding yourself in a rainbow of bright colors isn't the way to achieve inner zen. I also advise to keep the print to a minimum of objects. If the print is on your bed, it shouldn't be on the curtains as well. Remember, LSD is illegal for a reason.

For those who don't want to trip out on their bedding, trad or “traditional” prints and styles are perfect for you. Both of these collections are from Tommy Hilfiger and are available at Macy's. These are easy on the eyes and in care, and can be accessorized phenomenally easily. These are also great for women whose husbands don't want anything too “girly” or “flower-y.” These are such a classic they'll still look great and be in style 10 years down the road. It's hard to go wrong with these.

For those who want something more unusual or different in the bedroom, both of these lovely, lovely spreads come from Anthropologie. For those who like to dream and get inspired in their bedrooms, you can't go wrong with either of these. The duvet on the left has an ethereal quality to it, and the soft gray would pair well with any color. The goldenrod quilt on the right has unlimited potential in its use. You can mix and match different styles and colors and have all sorts of fun in accessorizing your room. A note of caution, though: Anthropologie goods are somewhat fragile. I would not recommend them if your kids or pets spend a lot of time on your bed. However, the designs and details are unmatched and almost impossible to find duplicates elsewhere.
While researching this post, I found that many stores are having large home good sales this weekend, so if you see something you like here or want to look elsewhere, now's the time to buy.
