Keeping a beat in the Mountain State
Mountain State Melodies
This fall, folks across the Mountain State will be grooving to the sounds of the Mountain Music Trail. A new initiative, the Mountain Music Trail was established to promote cultural tourism and sustainable economic development in West Virginia. Loosely developed near the Highway 219 corridor, the trail winds through Monroe, Greenbrier, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker counties with stops at music venues along the way.
“We want to preserve the music,” says Cara Rose, executive director of the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau and coordinator of the Mountain Music Trail. “We started in February (2013) with an exploratory meeting. Today we’ve been able to accomplish phase one of our plan.”
The trail is dedicated to promoting the traditional music and dance of Appalachia. It includes events in all five counties and partners with venues and musicians in each. From the historical Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg to the quaint Pretty Penny Café in Hillsboro, the trail is full of exciting entertainment for all ages. When it comes to expansion, those involved anticipate a bright future. “We’d love to one day have 100 partners or more,” Cara says.
