Summer Send-Off with Friends of the Cheat
As summer gives way to autumn, locals are preparing to celebrate the changing seasons by listening to local bands, savoring local food and wine, and buying local art during the Friends of the Cheat second annual Summer Send-off Concert on September 7, 2013.
Located at the beautiful Cheat River Festival site in Albright, this year’s concert features four local groups: Two Bulls in a China Shop (Lindsey Jaquay and Jason Jaros), Aurora Celtic, Andrew McKnight, and The Greens. The groups represent an eclectic selection of musical styles including folk, blue grass, and rock. “The Greens are modern rock, and Aurora Celtic is influenced by traditional string and Appalachian music. Then, there’s everything in between,” says Friends of Cheat Festival Coordinator Emma Donovan.
This concert and the annual Cheat River Festival are celebrations of the Cheat River and fundraisers for Friends of Cheat. In 1995, after a massive acid mine drained into the Cheat River, Friends of the Cheat formed to clean up and preserve the Cheat River. “The river is an integral part of people’s lives—the boating community, local folks—many people depend on the river for their health, recreation, and enjoyment,” Emma says. “The concert is a celebration of the Cheat River and the work that is ongoing.”
Concert-goers can bring a blanket, chair, or cooler, and kick back for the night, or bring tents and camp out at Teter’s Campground. “It’s a great opportunity to catch up on local talent, hang out, and relax before the end of summer,” Emma says. Specialty vendors like Broken Tractor Winery will be selling food, wine, and crafts. Gates open at 4 p.m., with live music from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 or $18 to include camping. Kids under 12 are free. Buy your tickets online, at the Friends of Cheat office in Kingwood, or at the gate.cheat.org
