Bluegrass music is special to so many people in West Virginia. On Friday, May 11, 2012, the 18th Annual Bluegrass Festival will kick off in Cairo at North Bend State Park, with music through Saturday.

“Bluegrass is really something the people of West Virginia live,” says Ken Zebo, the North Bend Park activities coordinator. “It’s something that has deep roots in our history. It started with a group of friends just hanging out and picking and singing. Now it’s evolved into something everyone can enjoy.”

The North Bend event is considered a mid-level festival that celebrates up-and-coming bands. Most performers are West Virginia natives, but bands from surrounding states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia show up as well. “It’s really a big event for us,” Ken says. “We want everyone to come out and have a good time. Hopefully everyone will enjoy the music and people will find some new bands to add to their music collections.” Along with bands, various vendors and plenty of festival food can be found at the festival.

Festivities will be held outside with a professional sound crew providing the audio. Ken advises fans coming to the event to dress appropriately for weather. “The concert will go on, rain or shine, but people should be prepared for anything.” In the event of rain, the band will perform under a shelter.
