As West Virginia's two largest universities met in a season opener last Saturday, September 1, in an exciting end to the state's Coal Bowl era, we had one thing in particular on our minds: tailgating. Needless to say, Mountain Staters know how to throw a good tailgate. But in case you're drawing blanks on some fresh and delicious ideas this football season, we thought we'd share a few of our favorite tailgatin' treats from issues past, as well as a few other fave finds.

Grab a drink, pull on your favorite school colors, and head to the stadium with coolers and containers full and ready.

Of course, we all crave greasy grub every once in a while and football season gives us the perfect opportunity to indulge. But WVU Extension Service has come up with some tasty alternatives to overindulgent tailgates with their "Hearty, Healthy Tailgating." Among other delectable ideas, they suggest trying marinated chicken instead of chicken wings, turkey sliders instead of bratwurst, and hummus with whole wheat pita instead of potato chips, and even provide several recipes like White Chili, Confetti Bean Salad, and fruit kabobs for dessert! Visit WVU Extension Service online for all the details.

Happy tailgating!
