Blueberry Bliss

So many things say "summer"—like juicy watermelon, fireworks, making s'mores at the campfire, hiking and swimming, family reunions, and...blueberries. Depending on the season, blueberries are ripe for the picking anytime between late June and early August and, while it takes little more to enjoy them than packing an entire handful into your mouth, there are so many deliciously delectable things you can do with your plump, fresh blueberries. There are, of course, the classics like blueberry pancakes and blueberry muffins—tried and true fare with which you can't go wrong. But people have also made their own blueberry ice cream, thrown some blueberries into bundt cakes, mixed the berries with other fruits like bananas, and even taken cornbread muffins to an entirely new level of flavor. We wanted to share just a few of our favorites and a few new recipes we can't wait to try ourselves. We hope you'll enjoy!

To pick your own berries in West Virginia, be sure to check out local farms like Blueberry Ridge Farm—from Morgantown, take 119 South past the I-68 Walmart and travel about 17 miles. Turn right on White Day Creek Road and follow the blue and white signs up the ridge to the farm. There's also White Oak Farm in Greenbrier County where you can pick blueberries and raspberries! Read all about this family-friendly farm in "Ripe for the Picking" featured in the Summer 2012 WV LIVING magazine.
